The gods must be laughing
To wrap up the month of November:
We have a second floor down and framing has been moving forward on the main floor. Now that we have a flat surface to hang the tarp on, it's beginning to dry out inside.
Of course, once we beat the rain, what comes our way?
Snow of course! The Sunday after Thanksgiving brought a dusting of snow, followed by an ice storm and more snow. The kids got a couple of extra days off from school and the builders got to frame the main floor in 18-degree weather.
If you are interested, here are some photos of the
view from the second floor. I managed to catch a few shots between rain clouds.

One person's floor is another's ceiling
The build team has made some major progress this week. They added a rim to the top of the house yesterday and started placing the joists and laying the subfloor of the second floor. (Look at the
photos!)
This of course means that we have covered up the first floor with a new ceiling! We still need the tarp to keep the new floor dry, but this makes it a lot easier to work.
We also heard from Dan today--looks like we are going to have to pay for this after all--we should see our first invoice soon. I called the bank to see how we actually clear an invoice. It appears that we never received an account rep for this loan. Unfortunately, it is 4pm pst and I'm pretty sure they've gone home for the night.
We were tired of living in a house.
Wouldn't you know it? As soon as the roof comes off the house, the rainy season starts. It's been a struggle to keep the water from out of the house now that the roof is off. Our house has been converted to a
big blue yert with the help of the biggest blue tarp you can buy at the hardware store.
We also located a cool leaded glass window for the vent window in the masterbed room. This window is an internal window that will let light and air in from the south. We picked it up at the
ReStore for $40!
Timber!
Okay, so more like Lumber. The first lumber delivery arrived yesterday. There is now a giant pile of wood covered by a tarp in the front yard. I peeked inside last night and noticed that the house has been anchored to the foundation and framing has begun in the basement.
I'm a little concerned because the footing in the NW corner has not been completed yet but I'll trust the team on this one--I'm sure they'll get it done eventually.
We spent the weekend scoping out appliances and cabinet for the kitchen. These are a couple of the items that we need to provide for the finished project, so this cost is coming directly out of our pocket. IKEA is looking like the front runner for our kitchen cabinets. We also found a cool gas range that is realatively reasonable in price--
a Bertazzoni. It's italian!
Concrete poured
The concrete is poured! I stopped buy the house this evening to look around. Not only was the concrete work done, but they had the house up on jacks in the southwest corner to level out the first floor. There is now a two inch gap between the foundation and garage wall--I hope this gets fixed before we move in. Seems like it would be a little cold if we keep it that way.
Both the Cherry tree and the Fig tree have been removed. Next up -- Framing
Successful Inspection!
The inspection went without a hitch. Apparently nobody noticed that the inspector had arrived and he tried to call the site lead. Of course, the cell phone was on the charger so nobody answered. Lucky for us, the inspector was in a good mood. He walked around the place and left us the passed notice on the porch.
Here are some
photos of our salvaged doors and the old Kohler sink that is going into the master bath.
